Mystery of the Scorched Map (IV - The Finale)
Chapter 13: The Hogtie in the Warehouse Ella Grunting into the cloth gagging her mouth, Ella rolled about on the floor. Or, at least, flopped about, since rolling was difficult the way she was tied. Rope bit into her wrists where they were tightly lashed together. More rope bit into her arms, looped around them and across her chest, coils looped both below and above her breasts. As much as she tried, she couldn’t even budge them, her arms well and truly bound to her body. Her legs were just as immobile, coils around her ankles, just below her knees, and another pinning her thighs together. These latter loops sat just below the hem of her dress, which now was a little the worse the wear. When Jack and Louise had got to work on tying her up, they weren’t leaving anything to chance. To make sure she was completely immobile, they had used another length of rope to tie her ankles to her wrists, pulling her arms back and her feet towards them. Ella had heard Jack mention something

Chapter 10: The Plan in the Car Sarah Ella and I stood there for a moment. After all that had happened, everything had fallen quiet, save for the ever-reducing crackle of flames from my earlier explosion. The silver car disappeared into the distance, its engine sound also reducing to nothing. “I’m so sorry,” I said to Ella. “No apologies,” she replied. She seemed oddly calm given that she had been abducted, tied up, and just watched her girlfriend being kidnapped. She continued to speak: “There was nothing more you could have done. You saved me, and that means that we can now go and save Amy.” She started to struggle with the ropes still around her arms and chest. “Although that might be easier without these.” “Hang on,” I said, using the knife to cut her free. Letting the ropes drop to the ground, I pointed away from the docks. “My car is over there. Let’s get out of here.” A few minutes later we were approaching my car. We both fell in, doors slamming shut. For a

Chapter 6: The Danger in the Fire Sarah I could feel the heat of the flames as they whipped up around me, finding no shortage of fuel to burn. I pulled desperately at the ropes holding me to the chair, but there was no give. Twisting my ankles, my feet hung uselessly just above the ground. I tried screaming, but the words couldn’t push past the cloth ball in my mouth. By now, the flames had raced out to the sides of the room, climbing up the walls, a few sparks now even finding something on the roof to hold on to. I rocked the chair from side to side, twisting my head to try and find something, anything, which could help me. There was my phone. It wasn’t much use to me at the moment, but it sat on the bench with the cash register. Along with something else which would be useful right now. An open pocket knife. I had no idea what was going on, why they were there, but now wasn’t the time to ask questions. I started to rock the chair over, twisting slightly each time, trying

Chapter 1: The Footprint in the Storm Sarah The main shop floor before me lit up, the crash from outside following almost instantaneously. The light from outside swamped that of the dull swinging bulb in the centre of the room, although when it receded, blackness filled the void. The crash was obviously more than just thunder; the power was out as well. I slipped my phone from the back pocket of my denim shorts, turning on the torch. The room was illuminated, light bouncing off the kitschy items that passed for souvenirs. I had been in the process of locking up the shop for the day, although I didn’t really see the point - there was nothing of value to steal. Still, I knew that my job would be on the line if I didn’t - the owner, Mr Dunnigan, was very insistent. There was no way I could afford to lose this job. As much as I wanted to just leave and lock up, I knew I should go and see if the electricity problem was easily fixed. I just pushed the door shut to stop the
15-year-old Rachel Hughes smirked and chuckled at the cheesy witches hat her older sister had made for her Halloween costume. “Dress up for Halloween, she said. You’re never too old and you’ll have fun, she said.” she muttered with a smile creeping onto her face. Carefully placing her sister’s garment on top of her head, the teen looked at herself in her mirror. Her witch's costume was simple. Of course, Aubrey and her friends wanted to add other accessories, but Rachel insisted that what she had was fine. Well, except for maybe Anna, but even the most serious of her older sister’s friends decided to give Aubrey’s ridiculous Halloween ideas a try. Rachel had on a pair of black flats, thin black sweats with a black skirt that had orange lining, a tight-fitting black shirt, and a black cape. Part of her dark brown and sea blue hair was braided before all of it was tied into a simple ponytail with the braids visible on the sides of her head, and she had on some green eyeshadow that
